Helping a Loved One with a Gambling Disorder

You're Not Alone
Understanding Gambling Addiction

A gambling addiction does not only affect the addicted individual - it affects the whole family. If you have a loved one who is struggling with a gambling addiction, you are not alone.

You may be feeling hurt by your loved one, and struggling to understand why they won’t stop gambling. You may feel as though you have exhausted all of your options, you’ve spent so much money trying to get them out of debt, and nothing is working.

If this describes your situation, there is hope for you and your loved one. Gambling is often perceived to be a condition of moral weakness or willful misconduct, but it is neither of these things.

Gamblers are not premeditating a way to go into debt and hurt the people they love; they gamble because they are addicted to the act of gambling, and feel like they can’t function properly with it. Gambling addiction is a serious illness, and needs to be treated with a sense of urgency.

This isn’t a battle you have to fight on your own. Our team of gambling counselors and therapists understand, more than most do, gambling addiction and the detriment it can have on relationships.

How Algamus Can Help

Algamus is one of the only gambling-specific treatment centers in the U.S., and has been treating people with all forms of gambling addiction for 30 years.

Our program is highly individualized to best suit each person, and our staff-to-patient ratio is nearly one-to-one. We focus not only on treating the gambling addiction, but the underlying cause of the addiction.

With a diverse staff consisting of certified gambling counselors, clinical psychiatrists, therapists, and recovering disordered gamblers, you can feel confident that your loved one will be receiving the best treatment for their needs.

WHAT PEOPLE SAY
Testimonials
"

I just wanted to let you know that Lynn reached one year of recovery from his gambling addiction today, and to thank everyone connected with Algamus for the great program that you have. Each day is a gift to both of us, and we will be forever grateful for the tools that he was given at Algamus that allow him to travel the road of recovery each day.

If you are struggling. If you are out of control. If you just want all the craziness of chasing money and falling further and further behind, to stop, let these good people help you! They are so well trained, many former gambling addicts themselves. They know what they're doing. All of my fellows in recovery had different patterns, styles and games and yet the staff worked wonders with them all. They knew the different types we were and how to maximize treatment effectiveness. Last I heard, we were all doing great post-rehab. I know I have placed my last bet in this lifetime.

I didn't take ownership of having a problem until I went to my first Algamus meeting...When they went around the room and each person described what their game of choice was and how they processed it emotionally and mentally,  it was only at that moment that I said, “wow, they are like me.”

Algamus provided the information, support, and ongoing guidance necessary for me to successfully recover from my addiction.  Without them I don’t know if I would be where I am today; 8 months later, free from my addiction for the first time in almost 20 years of struggle.

Algamus saved my life and my family. It has taken a few years to earn back the trust and respect I had lost, but I am blessed to be healthier and happier than I would have believed possible.

A special "Thank you" to Rick Benson and crew. I'm humbled by the work that you do.
