Gambling Treatment for College Students

Algamus Gambling Recovery Center treats college students and young adults in a five-week residential program in Goodyear, Arizona, with a 30-day minimum stay.  We treat gambling and nothing else, and we have been doing it for more than 30 years.

Winter Gambling Recovery Program

College can be a time of incredible growth and freedom but it can also bring a lot of stress. Problem gambling can compound that stress and can very quickly hurt your studies. If your studies have been impacted by gambling in any way this last year, it's time to get help.

This year, take a proactive step towards quitting gambling for good with our residential gambling addiction program for young adults.

Our 5-week program in Goodyear, Arizona equips college students with the tools they need to overcome any form of gambling addiction, from sports betting to online games. Our experienced team of therapists, psychiatrists, and counselors will guide you to uncover the root causes of your addiction and empower you to build a healthy future.

Our Gambling Treatment Plan

Our residential gambling addiction program is designed to be your comprehensive launchpad for lasting recovery from gambling addiction. We understand the importance of providing young adults with the tools and support needed to build a strong foundation for success.

Our program utilizes proven therapeutic methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) to address the underlying causes of your addiction. CBT equips you with practical skills to identify and challenge negative thoughts and behaviors that contribute to gambling urges. These skills are great for any young adult to learn and can be applied to other areas of your life as well.

We believe that recovery encompasses your entire well-being. Alongside therapy, you'll participate in a variety of activities that promote mindfulness, physical fitness, and creativity. We also organize occasional day trips to scenic locations like Sedona, Arizona.

This year can be a turning point. Contact us today for a free and confidential consultation to learn how our program can help you break free from gambling addiction and build a life of fulfillment.

Whether the gambling started with a phone betting app or a March bracket, the family program runs alongside treatment so parents are not left managing the aftermath alone, and aftercare support continues once the five weeks end.

Who This Program Is For

We admit adults 18 and over. Most young adults that come to our treatment program are roughly between 18 to 25, and fit the following criteria:

Students betting on sports through DraftKings, FanDuel, offshore books or a campus bookmaker

Young adults gambling on online casinos, slots or daily fantasy sports, often overnight and alone

Young men who have moved into day trading, options or crypto and describe it as investing

Clients with anxiety, depression or ADHD alongside the gambling, which we treat together rather than sequentially

Sports Betting Is the Common Thread

Twenty-two percent of male NCAA athletes bet on sports in the previous 12 months and 11% bet at least monthly, according to the NCAA 2024 survey of more than 20,000 student-athletes. About 2% met diagnostic criteria for problem gambling, roughly 6,000 competitors. The wider student body bets more than the athletes, not less. Rutgers addiction researchers point to NCAA data showing nearly 60% of 18-to-22-year-olds have bet on sports.

Two figures matter more than the headline rate. Men reporting single-day losses over $500 rose from 2% in 2016 to 5% in 2024. Men who gamble alone rose from 6% to 15% across the same NCAA survey data. Betting moved off the group chat and onto a phone, in private, at any hour of the night.

Almost nobody knows where to go with it. Only 10% of the men in that study knew how to find gambling help on their own campus, and an Oregon Health Authority review found just 3.3% of students had received any information about gambling risk from their university.

The young adults we admit are here for sports betting far more often than casino play, which shapes what recovery has to survive. A student going home to football season, a live betting group chat and three friends who still bet needs a plan for exactly that. Our sports betting addiction treatment work covers the warning signs that precede a crisis and the chasing losses cycle that turns a bad Sunday into a five-figure debt.

When Your Child Won't Agree to Go

Every family that calls us about a young adult describes the same standoff. The parent is ready. The son is not. In most of the admissions we take in this age group, the young adult agrees to come only after the money stops.

That is not a judgment about parents. It is a description of how the illness works. Gambling disorder is progressive, and it does not correct itself while someone else absorbs the losses. As long as debts get cleared, the person gambling has no reason to stop and every reason to continue.

The conversation that actually moves things is narrower than most parents expect. It's not an argument about whether he has a problem, because that argument never ends. It's a decision about what you're willing to fund. How much more are you prepared to spend supporting the gambling before you make treatment the condition of continued support?

Before you have to deliver an ultimatum to your child about their gambling problem, give us a call. We've had this conversation with a lot of families, and we can help you plan the specifics: what to say, what to hold, and what to have ready if he says he's ready for treatment that same night.

Common Questions From Students and Parents

My son has a gambling problem and won't agree to treatment. What can I do?
Set a condition and hold it. Most families see movement only after they stop covering losses and make treatment the term of continued support. Agree with the other parent first so he cannot go around you. Call us before that conversation and we will help you plan it.
Is sports betting treated differently from casino or online gambling?
The clinical work is the same because the disorder is the same. What changes is the environment he returns to. Sports bettors leave with a plan for football season, betting apps, live odds notifications and the friends who still bet, because that is what waits at home.
How old do you have to be for the young adult program?
We treat adults 18 and over. Most clients that come to our program are roughly between 18 to 25, which is where sports betting and online casino patterns concentrate.
Will he have to drop out or miss a semester?
Not usually. The program runs five weeks with a 30-day minimum, which fits inside a summer or winter break for most students. Families who start the conversation in June or early July have the most room to schedule. Mid-semester admissions happen when waiting until the break is not safe.
What happens after the five weeks?

Clients leave with an aftercare plan covering meetings, restricted money access and continued therapy where possible. Relapse risk is highest in the months right after discharge, so the plans that hold are the ones with someone checking in weekly.

Do you take insurance for a dependent on a family plan?

Often, yes. We hold contracts with several major carriers and verify benefits before admission, including for dependents on a parent's policy. Coverage turns on the specific plan and on medical necessity, so a benefits check answers this faster than any general rule. Start with insurance coverage.

"

Algamus Gambling Recovery Program Saved my Life. From the moment I spoke with Rick Benson I knew I was going to be able to get the help I so desperately needed. The entire staff: the house managers, the councilors, the management team, the owners, were caring and compassionate people.

The treatment program is amazing, the staff is the very best! I learned so much valuable information that I use in my daily life. Words are not enough to express my gratitude for Algamus, I have a future because of their program."

Algamus Client in Recovery

"

I attended the Algamus rehab program. They have professionally trained therapists that each specializes in areas that I needed to work on in my process of fighting my gambling addiction. I tried to overcome my addiction without any success. That included two previous rehabs. One of the things that also makes the Algamus program stand out is that they are exclusively dealing with gamblers. I am very blessed that I now have 2 1/2 years of recovery and I finally have some peace and serenity.  Thank you Algamus."

"

If you are struggling. If you are out of control. If you just want all the craziness of chasing money and falling further and further behind, to stop, let these good people help you! They are so well trained, many former gambling addicts themselves. They know what they're doing. All of my fellows in recovery had different patterns, styles and games and yet the staff worked wonders with them all. They knew the different types we were and how to maximize treatment effectiveness. Last I heard, we were all doing great post-rehab. I know I have placed my last bet in this lifetime."

"

I didn't take ownership of having a problem until I went to my first Algamus meeting. When they went around the room and each person described what their game of choice was and how they processed it emotionally and mentally,  it was only at that moment that I said, 'wow, they are like me.'"
